At the border with DRC the legendary snow-capped peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains are rising high above the savannah and rainforests. The mountain range, also known as the “Mountains of the Moon” are protected by the Rwenzori National Park Uganda and by the Virunga National Park in Congo. Its remarkable landscape can be explored along a 7-days trail that meanders along the Mobuku and Bujuku Valleys. While a variety of mammals inhabit the lower slopes, the Rwenzori Mountains are notable for the majestic vegetation of rainforest, bamboo forest and high-altitude moorland with giant high-altitude moorland with lobelias. The highest peak is the Margherita peak at 5109 meter, making this one of the most challenging climbing experiences of all African mountains.
